WRITING PORTFOLIO
My portfolio features sharp, research-driven writing at the intersection of film theory, feminism, and media studies. With published work in In Media Res, Burnaway, Oz Magazine, and Screen Queens, my works explore cinema’s portrayal of motherhood, as well how the American South is historically depicted in cinema. Most of the time I write about films shot in Georgia.

“In the canon of horror cinema, the conventional monster often embodies an external threat or force; something tangible and recognizable, usually confined to the supernatural or the grotesque. Yet, in The Woman in the Yard, the terror is not merely about motherhood or poverty in the abstract. It is about Black motherhood in the rural South, where survival has historically depended on communal networks of care and kinship that are here stripped away.”

“Franchised horror movies are often set in the South. The frequent interpretation is that the South itself is haunted. However, I argue that many horror films are rooted in the Southern landscape because of the Nation’s lens on the South. A franchise like House of 1000 Corpses (2003) is set in the South not because Southerners are more susceptible to suffering, but because America believes that the torture inflicted on the region occurs in perpetuity.”

“Curran’s discipline and maturity level are the key components to her success. The young actor understands the level of mastery and work ethic that is required to become a star. However, her love for horror sets her apart from other child actors, many who would not dare to take on the dark material Curran developed and performed in Doctor Sleep.”
